With 26 countries under my belt, I think it’s fair to say I’ve been about a bit! But out of these 26 countries, 15 have been in Europe…and yet there is still so much of this diverse continent that I want to explore.
For the most part on this blog, I talk about my budget backpacking experiences a little further afield, but believe it or not, I have been known to dabble in a little bit of luxury from time-to-time.
While I am perfectly happy slumming it in $5 a night mixed-bed dormitories for weeks at a time, sometimes it’s nice to splurge out a little and treat yourself! Hey, I work hard…I’m not going to feel guilty about it!
So for now, let’s break the mould and touch of some of my all-time favourite luxury European city breaks…
London
Living in the Midlands of the UK means I am only a stones throw away from the buzzing capital of England. I’ve lost count of the number of times I have visited, but it never disappoints. Whether you want to experience fine dining or get some retail therapy in the stunning Covent Garden, or soak up some history and culture at the Natural History Museum, London’s energetic and vibrant atmosphere makes it a must-visit metropolis.
Where to stay: Rosewood London Hotel
Bruges
Reasons to go to Bruges: chocolate, waffles, beer. Sold! Known as the “Venice of the North” with its picturesque canals, Bruges is a charming little city that makes the perfect luxury weekend break at any time of year. Walking around the ancient cobbled streets, while traditional horse-drawn carriages pass by, will make you feel as though you have taken a magical step back in time. It’s the ultimate romantic getaway (now…if only I had someone to share it with???)
Where to stay: Luxury – Hotel de Castillion
Amsterdam
Amsterdam is well-known for its laid back vibes, yet it is still a location which oozes sophistication and bohemian charm. Amsterdam has long been seductive to both visitors near and far with its stunning setting around a 17th century ‘Golden Age’ ring of canals. Whether you want to pedal round quiet streets, eat on a café terrace by a leafy canal-side, picnic in the park, or simply marvel at some of the most beautiful paintings in the world, Amsterdam literally has something for everyone.
Where to stay: INK Hotel Amsterdam
Edinburgh
Bonny Edinburgh, oh how I adore you! While it may not be the sunniest location in the world, if you don’t mind a bit of rain, the Scottish capital offers so much more than just kilts, bagpipes and haggis. Steeped in history, culture and sheer beauty, there is much to love about this city. Take a walk up to Edinburgh Castle, visit the National Museum of Scotland, or get lost in the medieval alleyways of the Old Town.
Where to stay: Tiger Lilly Hotel
So there you have it, my favourite luxurious city destinations in Europe! Are there any others that you think I should explore? Tell me below!

June 9, 2016 at 2:25 amEdinburgh is my all time favourite. Spend there one summer working while at high school with my boyfriend. 11 years later, we are still dreaming of returning for a visit. We had the best time and hopefully will come visit soon!
